The National Health Insurance's planned 2026 pilot phase has been postponed indefinitely after the National Treasury declined to release R12.4 billion in allocated funding, citing the need for fiscal consolidation and unresolved procurement frameworks.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi acknowledged the delay in a parliamentary briefing, blaming "administrative capacity constraints" at the Office of Health Standards Compliance, which is responsible for accrediting facilities for the NHI network.
Private hospital groups including Netcare and Mediclinic saw their shares rise on the news, with analysts interpreting the delay as extending the timeline for any potential restructuring of the private healthcare market.
