Verstappen Reports Red Bull Closing Gap With Miami Upgrade Package

Max Verstappen says Red Bull has halved the gap to the leading pack with its latest upgrade package at the Miami Grand Prix, describing the progress as a positive step for the team after a difficult run of form.

Max Verstappen says Red Bull has halved the gap to the leading pack with the upgrade package brought to the Miami Grand Prix, describing the team's improved pace on Friday as a positive step after a difficult run of form.

The reigning four-time world champion completed the opening practice sessions at the Miami International Autodrome on Friday 2 May 2026, with Verstappen reporting he felt more comfortable with the Red Bull RB21's handling characteristics than in recent rounds. "A positive step for us," Verstappen said of the car's performance, according to the team's official Formula 1 social media account.

The Upgrade Package

Red Bull brought a significant aerodynamic update to Miami, its first substantial revision since the opening races of the 2026 season. The package includes modifications to the floor, rear wing, and suspension geometry aimed at improving tyre management and reducing drag on the high-speed sections of the Miami circuit.

Verstappen's comments to ESPN at the circuit suggested the early indicators were encouraging. The Dutch driver, who has spoken candidly this season about the RB21's inconsistent behaviour compared to the dominant RB19 and RB21 from previous campaigns, indicated the new components had moved the car in the right direction. Whether the gains are enough to challenge McLaren and Ferrari for pole and race wins remains to be seen once qualifying and the sprint race play out.

A Difficult Start to 2026

The Miami weekend arrives after a March and April in which Red Bull appeared to fall behind its rivals in development trajectory. McLaren, powered by Mercedes customer engines, and Ferrari have both shown strong race pace across multiple circuits, while Red Bull's margin over the field has narrowed considerably since the first race in Bahrain.

Verstappen has remained competitive — he has finished on the podium in every race this season — but the dominant, race-winning superiority the team enjoyed in previous years has not been evident. The gap to pole position in qualifying has been a particular concern, with Verstappen unable to extract the one-lap performance that had become his signature advantage.

The Miami circuit, with its long straights and heavy braking zones, has historically suited the aerodynamic efficiency of Red Bull cars. If the upgrade package delivers as Verstappen suggests, the sprint race format this weekend gives the team an early opportunity to convert practice pace into championship points.

What It Means for the Championship

The 2026 Drivers' Championship has developed into a three-way contest more competitive than any since the ground-effect era began. With McLaren's Lando Norris and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc both scoring consistently, Red Bull cannot afford a continuation of its early-season shortfall. Verstappen remains the favourite in most bookmakers' assessments, but the buffer he once enjoyed over his rivals has effectively evaporated.

A strong weekend in Miami — with a win or a podium in both the sprint and the feature race — would rebuild psychological and practical separation in the constructors' and drivers' standings. The upgrade package's performance will be scrutinised closely. If the gains hold across different tyre compounds and race conditions, Red Bull can reframe the narrative of the season. If the pace proves circuit-specific, the team's development pressure will intensify heading into the European leg.

Stakes and Forward View

Miami marks the fifth round of a 24-race season. With 19 Grands Prix and a sprint weekend remaining after this event, the championship picture remains fluid. Red Bull's upgrade is the first clear signal the team has sent that it intends to arrest its relative decline rather than accept a new equilibrium at the front of the grid.

Verstappen's own assessment — that the gap to the leaders has been halved — is significant if it holds beyond Friday practice. The sprint race on Saturday morning will provide an immediate test. Qualifying follows later on Saturday, with the main race on Sunday. The data gathered across all three sessions will determine whether Miami represents a turning point or merely a temporary reprieve.
