Israeli Drone Strike Kills Father and Son Near Al-Wahda Tower in Gaza City

Monexus examines what can be verified about an Israeli UAV strike that killed two civilians near Al-Wahda Tower in western Gaza City on May 16, and what remains beyond independent corroboration.

@JahanTasnim · Telegram

Two men — Bahaa Baroud and his son Mohammed — were killed in an Israeli drone strike that targeted a civilian vehicle near the Al-Wahda Tower in western Gaza City on the evening of May 16, 2026, according to reports from multiple Gaza-based news feeds and Iranian state media. Several other people travelling in the vehicle were wounded. The strike was reported across a cluster of Telegram channels operating in the Gaza City coverage area between approximately 17:45 and 18:52 UTC.

Monexus has reviewed what can and cannot be independently verified from open-source reporting of the incident. The picture that emerges is one familiar to anyone tracking the conflict: confirmed at the level of a strike occurring and casualties resultants, but thin on the institutional attribution, military justification, and independent corroboration that would allow a full factual accounting.

What the sources confirm

Four Telegram posts, all published between 17:45 and 18:52 UTC on May 16, document the strike. The earliest post from Gazaalanpa, at 17:45 UTC, describes a vehicle targeted by Israeli warplanes near Al-Wahda Tower. A follow-up post at 17:57 UTC names the two dead: Bahaa Baroud and his son Mohammed. An English-language channel, englishabuali, reported the same event at 18:52 UTC, describing it as an Israeli UAV strike on a jeep near Burj al-Wahda in western Gaza City, with two killed and several wounded. PressTV, the English-language service of Iranian state media, published a report at 18:10 UTC citing two killed and several injured in what it described as an Israeli drone strike targeting a civilian vehicle near the Al-Wahda Tower. All four posts reference images of the targeted vehicle.

The consistency across these accounts on the core facts — a strike, two dead, a civilian vehicle, a specific location — constitutes a baseline level of corroboration. The names Bahaa Baroud and Mohammed Baroud appear in no other public record reviewed by Monexus as of publication.

What cannot be independently verified

No Western wire service, UN agency, or international NGO had published an independent report on this specific incident as of 20:00 UTC on May 16. The IDF Spokesperson Unit has not been reached for comment by Monexus and has not published a statement on this strike in the channels reviewed. No casualty count from an external medical or judicial body has been independently confirmed.

The military justification — whether the vehicle was assessed as carrying combatants, whether a warning was issued, whether proportionality standards were applied — is not addressable from the available open-source material. That is not a criticism of the sources; it is a structural feature of reporting from a densely populated conflict zone where independent international journalists have not operated at scale since late 2023.

Context: civilian vehicle strikes in urban Gaza

The targeting of civilian vehicles in Gaza has been a recurring feature of reporting throughout the conflict. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have documented instances of strikes on cars, ambulances, and motorcycles in which they have alleged that the civilian status of the target was not in dispute. Israeli military spokespeople have in previous cases stated that vehicles were used by militants or were struck pursuant to legitimate military objectives.

In this case, the sources describe the vehicle as civilian and do not ascribe any combatant status to its occupants. The images circulating on Telegram show a car with extensive damage consistent with an aerial strike. Without access to IDF targeting records or independent on-the-ground investigators, Monexus cannot assess whether the strike met the threshold for lawful targeting under international humanitarian law.

Al-Wahda Tower itself has a history in this conflict. The structure — a residential high-rise in western Gaza City — has been struck multiple times since October 2023, according to satellite imagery and open-source conflict monitors. Its repeated targeting illustrates the density of structures caught in the Israeli military's targeting logic across an urban area of roughly two million people.

What we verified / what we could not

Verified:

  • An Israeli drone or UAV strike targeted a vehicle near Al-Wahda Tower in western Gaza City on May 16, 2026, between approximately 17:00 and 18:00 UTC.
  • Two people — named as Bahaa Baroud and his son Mohammed — were killed.
  • Several others were wounded.
  • The strike was reported by at least four distinct Telegram channels operating in the Gaza coverage area, with consistent core facts.

Not verified:

  • The military status of any individual in the vehicle.
  • Whether a warning was issued prior to the strike.
  • Whether the strike was authorised through an IDF targeting review process.
  • Any official Israeli statement on the incident.
  • Casualty figures beyond what the Telegram sources report.

Stakes

Every strike on a civilian vehicle that cannot be independently verified becomes a data point in a larger pattern — one that human rights organisations, international courts, and conflict monitors are systematically compiling. The difficulty is not in documenting that strikes occur; it is in establishing the legal and factual basis for each one. Without independent access or an official record, these incidents accumulate in open-source databases as unverified — not disproven, not confirmed, simply unresolved.

For the families of Bahaa Baroud and Mohammed, the factual record will eventually emerge through whatever channels — medical records, witness testimony, legal proceedings — remain available. For analysts and policymakers assessing the conduct of the conflict, the gap between what happened and what can be verified from open sources remains a structural problem.

Monexus will continue to monitor for any official statement from the IDF Spokesperson Unit, any independent media reporting, or UN or NGO documentation of this incident.

This publication's Telegram-first coverage of the May 16 strike follows the same pattern visible across the conflict since late 2023: wire-equivalent speed from local feeds, with the caveat that independent corroboration from institutional sources typically trails those feeds by hours or days. The wire services have yet to publish on this specific incident.
